5th December 2009 - Warm Up Changes

With pre-match warm up conductor Andy MacLean finding himself in the starting eleven on Saturday, his usual gruelling routine gave way to a distinctly low key affair. Gone were the sprints and in came excessive periods of stretching and ball work in order to preserve the "old boy's" legs for the full ninety minutes ahead. Some might argue MacLean continued this laid-back approach for the duration of the game.

21st November 2009 - Silver Touch

For the second time in three weeks, veteran Andy MacLean has come off the bench to replace the shot-shy Steven Beaton whose exertions for eighty minutes had failed to produce a goal. On both occasions, to the frustration of Beaton, the experienced forward found himself in the right place at the right time to convert a tap-in from close range in the final minutes.

16th November 2009 - While We've Been Away....

After a few months in hibernation, we are back up to date with all this season's results and statistics. After a sluggish start to their Division One North campaign, including defeat to local rivals Tarves and a 7-2 hiding by Newtonhill, Thistle finally landed their first win on matchday five at home to Theologians. The Jags quickly followed up that victory with a 5-1 win against old foes Stoneywood but performances since have been erratic. The loss of Michael Wild through injury has been a major blow and Thistle's top scorer over the last three seasons is unlikely to return before the end of the year. Recently, results have improved with victories without loss of a goal in their last two fixtures. Thistle travel to Balgowine to face University Colts on Saturday in a league match looking to extend their unbeaten run to three.

27th July 2009 - Trophies International 1 Ellon Thistle 4

Trophies International hosted Thistle at Auchterellon in the Jags final warm up game before the new season. A Bruce Alexander penalty gave Thistle the advantage at half time before a number of changes by both sides at the interval. Goals from Cammy Davidson, David Anderson and Paul Ironside put the visitors four up but slack defending from a corner allowed 'T.I.' to grab a consolation in the closing stages.

27th July 2009 - Gibbo Quits, 'Side Returns

Club comedian Michael Gibson has left Ellon Thistle to join Potterton and in an unexpected twist, Paul Ironside returned to the club after he reconsidered his decision to quit. But will the striker see out the season with the Jags? Watch this space for further developments in 'Sidegate'.

26th July 2009 - Opening Fixtures

Season 2009/10 begins on 1st August and Ellon Thistle will travel to Stonehaven Athletic on Saturday. The Jags will then host Torry United at The Meadows on Wednesday.

25th July 2009 - 'Side Quits

Thistle forward Paul Ironside has decided to leave the club. The player had recently returned from a hernia operation and had been participating in light training. However, 'The Side' felt he could not give the club 100% commitment and concluded that leaving would be best for both parties. Despite an injury plagued campaign, Ironside still managed to bag 14 goals in 14 starts last season.

22nd July 2009 - Cruden Bay U19s 1 Ellon Thistle 4

The Jags continued their preparations in Boddam where they faced a stuffy Cruden Bay under-19 side. Thistle were well below par in the first half but took advantage of a tiring Bay side in the second period with goals from debutant Cowie (2), Ironside and an own goal.

22nd July 2009 - Thistle Promotion Odds

A local punter who wished to remain anonymous, has boldly staked twenty British pounds on Ellon Thistle gaining promotion to the Premier Division this season. The Ellon bookmaker offered odds of 3/1.

20th July 2009 - Red, Amber, Green

Coach Andy MacLean has revolutionised Thistle training sessions with a host of new ideas and drills. One particular favourite amongst the Thistle squad is the Red-Amber-Green method. Despite being a fairly simple exercise (Red means stop....you get the idea), Henderson and Anderson found the concept difficult to grasp early on. As the session became quite intense, the team enjoyed a jelly & ice cream break before Pass the Parcel could begin.

18th July 2009 - Fraserburgh 8 Ellon Thistle 1

The Jags headed north again for their 'glamour game' to the picturesque Fraserburgh. Andy Dickinson returned to keep goal, for what proved to be a busy afternoon, in the absence of regular keeper Adamson. With the Broch fielding an almost full strength side, the first period was always going to be a struggle as Thistle spent most of their time chasing shadows around Bellslea Park. An early, well taken, equaliser from Wild only seemed to anger the highland league side who spanked another 6 in before the break. Thistle did regroup in the second half and looked a far tougher side to break down with only the one more goal sneaking past the impressive Dickinson. A good workout for the jags who, thankfully, won't face a side of this calibre in Division 1 North.

15th July 2009 - Westdyke 1 Ellon Thistle 1

Ellon continued their pre-season preparations with a trip to Westhill where they faced Premier Division side Westdyke. Thistle stalwart Ian Bailey officiated this very competitive contest with little fuss. There was little to pick between the sides early on but it was Ellon who broke the deadlock in the second period when Michael Wild set up Richard Longmuir who fired low into the bottom corner. Westdyke equalised soon after when Thistle failed to clear their lines from a corner.

11th July 2009 - Cruden Bay 1 Ellon Thistle 3

Thistle started their pre-season tour of the Banff & Buchan region with a trip to New Deer to face Cruden Bay juniors. An impressive first half showing saw the jags comfortably lead 3-0 at HT with goals from Dailly (2) and new player/coach MacLean. The second half saw both teams make several changes as the game ran out of puff with the bay grabbing a consolation goal, after some indecision in the backline. Debuts were handed to Bryson & Kennedy, while two other trialists were given a run out as the Jags made a good start to the season.
