Deva Dons v Ellon Thistle

Division Two East

Ellon still hurting after the abysmal capitulation versus Monymusk a week prior were in the mood to get their title ambitions back on track. Deva on the other hand were fighting to preserve their league status as defeat would see them relegated.

Ellon had an early chance when some good passing play led to the right foot of Wild who totally out of character volleyed well wide. But WILD soon made up for his mistake by scoring a goal that defied the laws of physics. The striker received the ball out on the left corner flag .The striker then charged towards goal on the by-line and hit a left footer that somehow shifted in the air and found the back post. What a finish or miss hit cross? The dubious goals panel are out on this one.

From centre Ellon almost had a second when McGill hit a blockbuster that almost snapped the crossbar.

But it wasn’t all easy for the Jags. The defence were caught napping and the striker was bearing down on goal but a meal was made of the situation. Shortly after another Dons player was in on goal only to make a scandalous attempt to win a penalty. Out and out cheating that did not receive a yellow card.

The spectators were treated to a piece of comedy genius by Cruickshanks. The Ellon “reducer” was himself reduced to all fours when he lost his balance but such was his will to win the ball he proceeded on his hands and feet sprinting up the line in true greyhound fashion.

This game was anything but a classic with little action before the half apart from McGill again finding wood again when his lob hit the upright.

Half Time: Deva Dons 0 Ellon Thistle 1

Wild grabbed a brace with a great solo effort in the fiftieth minute. Cruickshanks played the ball to him and with a man hot on his heels, WILD ran a full thirty five yards and unleashed a belter which left the keeper with nothing to do but admire the finish.

Deva's number 12 (a Stevie Fulton Look-alike) was shown yellow for a reckless challenge on Anderson. This keeping up the referee’s consistency in the game. The man in the middle had a good game throughout.

Ellon grabbed a third and it was that man again. The goal showed how quick a game can turn. The Jags had dropped the pace a bit after their second and Deva had a few attacks with one being cleared off the line by Anderson, that clearance found WILD who again went on a long run which had the same outcome as the last run, GOAL!

Fresh legs were introduced when Beaton came into the fray and it wasn’t long before his left peg was causing havoc when his pinpoint cross found the head of McKeitch who somehow headed over from close range.

The Dons did grab a consolation when Birnie missed a tackle and the substitute fifteen curled a decent effort into the corner.

Longmuir was brought on for Birnie and Andy (Grannypants) MacLean replaced goal slut Mikey Wild whose hatrick has as good as cemented his top scorer award for the season. Get the engraver out. When it comes to scoring goals he really is “King of the Ring”
