Ellon Thistle v FC Polska

Division Two East

To most peoples surprise this league encounter went ahead. The Meadows was under fire from a deluge of biblical proportions. This was to lead to some good viewing with both sets of players having to keep their wits about themselves about each other and Mother Nature.

Ellon were missing a few players for this match with captain Ryan Birnie suffering from what can only be described as man flu, Bruce Alexander, Steven Cruikshanks and Paul Ironside were al suspended and long term injury Graeme Giles still recovering.

With ambitions of going top of the table Ellon flew out of the traps creating a few chances but none of which ending up in the polish net. Nobody would have grudged The Jags the lead, and the pressure did eventually pay off when a great ball from Cockburn found WILD in the box who first timed a quality effort at goal and past Polskas keeper. 1-0 and deservedly so.

Wild was to have another decent chance shortly after when he was eighteen yards out but only managed to blaze over the visitors crossbar. Shortly after Wild was involved again when he was ruthlessly taken from behind in the box. A stonewaller that wasn’t given, this being a frequent event in Jags games this season. Wild again was guilty of bad finishing when he invaded the polish box and was left one on one only to fail to double the scoreline.

But the second goal did come when Anderson fired a great ball to Wild who squared across the penalty area to MACLEAN who was left with an open net. There was no mistake from the silver headed striker who was starting his first competitive match in over two years due to injury. The big forward could have had two when his net bound effort was stopped on the line by teamate Beaton and he was to have a second bite of the cherry but his effort flew embarrassingly out for a throw in.

Half-Time: Ellon Thistle 2 FC Polska 0

The second half started scrappily and the rain was getting the better of the park with puddles forming on it. This was to play a part in the half.

WILD put the game beyond doubt on the hour mark when for the umpteenth time he found himself clean through but the ball held up giving the defender time to get back and challenge, but the Ellon striker got the break of the ball and swerved an effort with great bravado past the hapless keeper.3-0

A water assisted goal was to make it 4-0 when Martyn DUNCAN found himself in space and bearing down on goal, with the keeper committing himself Duncan took a poor touch which took a funny spin round the keeper leaving the midfielder with an open goal to slot into.

The Jags threw on Longmuir and McGill for MacLean and Cockburn and it was to pay of when McGILL sent a piledriver past the keeper 5-0 and cruising.

Adamson was called into action in a rare piece of Polish attack when he managed to pull off a great save from his back, but his cleansheet was to be voided when Polska received a corner. Ellon manager Kennedy held the corner flag which was impeding the player from taking the kick. The ball was swung in and after one attempt was blocked the second found its way in. (Would this count as an assist from the Jags boss).

Top of the league after an emphatic win. If they keep up this form they will definitely be in the run in for promotion come the end of the season.
