Ellon Thistle v Luthermuir
Dickie Trophy 2nd Round
Well if you thought the Theologians game was a disgrace, Read this:
Martyn Duncan was fit after being “bushwhacked” last weekend, Neil “Pooch” Henderson was to miss the proceedings due to a bout of tonsillitis (possibly due to Cyril Sneer) and Adam Kerr made way for Mikey Gibson due to injury.
Ellon could have been winning in the early seconds when an Ironside attempt was deflected agonisingly past the post. From the resulting corner Ryan Birnie struck a venomous hit, only to hit the defender. It was also apparent that the Luthermuir keeper couldn’t catch a cold, but were Ellon to capatalise?
Very sloppy defending by the Jags, fresh out of a primary school match meant they trailed by a goal early on.
Then it was an unbelievable two nil, and again the defending was non apparent, but credit where credits due the headed finish was a good one.
Along with the keepers butter fingers it was obvious that Luthermuir just boot it up the park and try to do teams over by playing the simple kick and chase game, and such a simple tactic seemed to have Ellon on the rack.
Passions brewed over when substitute Mikey Gibson had a confrontation with the ref, and “the Gibbo” stood his ground and spoke the truth by telling the referee he was a shambles, his officiating skills wouldn’t be accepted at a primary match let alone an amateur game.
Half-Time: Ellon Thistle 0 Luthermuir 2
Ellon started the second half with fireworks in their behinds but it wasn’t to last.
They were to get themselves back in to the game, through a penalty when Martyn Duncan was chopped down only for the “Hatton Hobbit” to get booked for his sarcastic comments to the assailant. But that didn’t stop IRONSIDE slotting away the penalty.
Then from out of nowhere Mikey WILD struck on to a Keith Duncan ball in. A cracking finish. Was this the lift Thistle needed?
Uh oh the Thistle self destruct button was hit, they shot themselves in the foot again which is the fashion of the “Jags”. Through some atrocious defending yet again Luthermuir were in the lead. 2-3.
Ellon lost all form of shape and play. Maybe the fact they were in “Aberdeen” red instead of the usual yellow was confusing them due to the fact there was a lot of passing to the opposition.
Then it was a “knockout” of the Joe Calzaghe variety when Luthermuir made it mission accomplished when they struck the fourth and final goal. The goal coming from a free man running through when three Thistle boys challenged the same ball. Poor defending for the fourth time of this long afternoon. The woodwork was struck by Gibson late on but it would have been an undeserved consolation.
The Ellon inconsistency was distinct again as Ellon died of death in the latter stages. A sore one for those who care, as Thistle were toppled out of yet another cup competition
