Ellon Thistle v Nicolls Amateurs

AFC Trophy 3rd Round

Ellon Thistle were dumped out of the AFC Trophy at the hands of Nicolls Amateurs in the third round on Saturday. The visitors finished the game with just 8 men but the game was won before Martyn Duncan and two Nicolls players got their handbags out on the final whistle resulting in all three being dismissed.

Greg Gillan sclaffed his size eighteens at a near post corner inadvertently diverting the ball beyond Adamson to hand Nicolls the lead. Billy Dailly struck an equaliser for The Jags before the visitors regained the advantage from the penalty spot after Cammy Davidson fouled inside the 18 yard box.

Nicolls were reduced to ten men before half time which offered Thistle a glorious opportunity to progress to the next round but they could not capitalise on their numerical advantage. Cowie and Reid squandered chances before the former rattled the crossbar from close range.

As Thistle pressed for an equaliser, Nicolls were dangerous on the break and snatched two further goals late in the game to win the tie.
