4th June 2009 - Brazilian Names

If you were to play for Brazil, what would your name be? Find out your Brazilian name or if that doesn't amuse you, try Mark Cockburn's, it's a beezer. My Brazilian Name

30th May 2009 - Pre-season Training

Pre-season training for the 2009/10 season will begin on Wednesday 1st July at the Gordon Park at 6.30pm. This is sufficient warning to make alternative arrangements for this time.

30th May 2009 - Transfer Talk

Manager Kevin Kennedy has wasted no time in strengthening his squad for the forthcoming season by orchestrating the return of Billy Dailly. Dailly left the club at the end of the 2007/08 season and will be a welcome addition to the squad as Thistle face the challenge of the First Division. There will no doubt be further arrivals over the summer as replacements will be sought for Keith Duncan who leaves to sell hotdogs at Disney World, Adam Kerr who moves south of the border and Duncan McGill whose work commitments will hinder his involvement.

30th May 2009 - Award Winners

This years end of season awards dinner was held at Ellon Golf Club where Neil Henderson picked up both the Committee and Player's Player of the year awards. Richard Longmuir was presented with Clubman of the Year while Michael Wild retained his top scorer award. Two new trophies were presented as Bruce Alexander was delighted to receive the Most Improved Player award and Duncan McGill scooped the inaugural Duncan v Duncan Trophy.

20th May 2009 - Ellon Thistle Promoted

Fourth place in Division Two East has proved enough for Thistle to gain promotion. With two teams withdrawing from Division One during the season, four teams will advance from both Division Two leagues. Rumours had been circulating that there was a chance of promotion outside the top three and after being tuned into Skysports News for some time, Georgie Thompson finally confirmed the good news:

After an unsuccessful attempt to claim the Division Two title and then seeing a top three finish slip from their grasp, everyone involved with the club was bitterly disappointed. However, the frustration of these failures was shortlived as the Jags were gifted a promotion lifeline.

19th May 2009 - Promotion Hopes Dashed

Two of Thistle's promotion rivals showed the Jags how it is done by racking up big scores against teams in the bottom half of the table that Ellon had failed to beat in recent weeks. Insch followed up Stoneywood's thrashing of University Strollers last week by giving McTeagle six without reply. These results confirm Insch and Stoneywood's participation in Division One next season and therefore Thistle's hopes of advancing from Division Two East are dead and buried.......or are they......?

8th May 2009 - Promotion Out of Our Hands

After a disappointing draw at McTeagle and surrendering a two-goal advantage to Glendale, Thistle's promotion hopes look all but over. A win in their final game at Luthermuir is a must, while they rely on Insch dropping points at home to McTeagle or Stoneywood Amateurs claiming no more than one point from their final two fixtures.

8th May 2009 - Thistle Slip to Fourth

Ellon Thistle dropped out of the top three of Division Two East for the first time since September. After an eight month unbeaten league run, the Jags have since lost three of their last five league games to put their promotion hopes in jeopardy. Halliburton are the latest team to inflict defeat on Thistle when they won 3-1 at The Meadows, a result which may have re-ignited their own promotion challenge. Stevie High made his customary season appearance between the sticks in place of the suspended Daniel Adamson but he could not prevent Thistle's sixth league defeat of the season. Ellon travel to Sheddocksley on Saturday to face their 'bogey' team McTeagle before hosting league leaders Glendale at The Meadows on Monday.

12th April 2009 - Boozegate II

Ellon Thistle suffered their first league defeat since August at Monymusk on Saturday and the manner of the defeat raised questions about many of the poor performers antics the previous night. Manager Kevin Kennedy was furious with his teams capitulation to the home side and confronted the squad about their behaviour on Friday. A number of players admitted being 'on the sauce' and that this had significantly hampered their performance. However, despite taking a firm line in the aftermath of the match, Kennedy is likely to persevere with his young offenders for Saturdays away fixture at Deva Dons.

6th March 2009 - Barclay Cook Cup Semi Finals

After disposing of Insch in Saturday's Barclay Cook quarter final, Thistle have been rewarded with a semi final tie with early league pace-setters Stoneywood Amateurs. The match takes place at Strathburn Park in Inverurie on Saturday 7th March at 2pm with the winners facing Luthermuir or Halliburton in the final.

5th March 2009 - Fraserburgh v Ellon Thistle

Ellon Thistle made their annual visit to the Broch on Wednesday night to test themselves against Highland League opposition. Despite a 3-0 success over their hosts last season, Thistle knew they faced a difficult task and were three behind after the first half hour period. The second spell continued in the same vein with Fraserburgh imposing their superiority and extending their lead. Thistle managed to hit a consolation goal through David McKeitch in the final period but the Jags were well beaten by this time. Regardless of the result, this proved a valuable workout for a number of Thistle players who had rarely featured in the first team over the last few weeks.

12th February 2009 - The Mystery of the Free Week

A 'free' week was requested by Thistle management for Saturday 14th February for reasons that have not been disclosed. According to a source who did not want to be named, the fixtureless weekend may be due to the unavailability of Martyn Duncan. The diminutive midfielder is considered to be integral element of the Jag's starting eleven and it has been suggested that his potential absence may have prompted the actions of the Thistle management team. A spokesman for the club was unavailable to comment.

12th January 2009 - Formartine United U19's 2 Ellon Thistle 6

Thistle turned in a more impressive performance than usual against their perennial friendly opponents at Oldmeldrum on Monday night. Despite falling behind early on, the Jags responded positively and ran out comfortable winners. Doubles from Mikey Wild and Richard Longmuir followed Duncan McGill's equaliser for Ellon. David Anderson capped an impressive display with a tap in late on but the Thistle goal tally should have been higher had Paul Ironside not ballooned over the bar with the Formartine keeper stranded in the first period. The Thistle striker appears to be feeling the pressure knowing he'll be leading the frontline for the next two games due to the suspension of Mikey Wild but in his defence, he has been hampered with a Sunday to Friday hamstring groin problem.

12th January 2009 - Stabber and Nelly Reject United Offer

Ellon United have made an approach to land the services of Ellon Thistle's David Anderson and Neil Henderson. Thistle's dynamic defensive duo were given every opportunity talk to United and progress in the junior ranks but much to the delight of the players and management at Thistle, both have rejected the offer and will remain at the amateur side for the foreseeable future.

10th January 2009 - Thistle Manager Spotted at Brechin City

Rumours were rife that Ellon Thistle manager Kevin Kennedy was due to take over the vacant hotseat at Scottish Second Division side Brechin City after he was spotted at Glebe Park. However, it soon became apparent that this was a case of mistaken identity as City later unveiled Jim Duffy as their new manager.

9th January 2009 - Ian Birnie Awarded Association Medal

The Association Medal for 2008 has been awarded to Ellon Thistle's very own Ian Birnie. Ian was nominated for the award by John Irvine of Bucksburn United. Thistle celebrated their 40th anniversary last summer and the Medal was presented to Ian in recognition of the outstanding service which he has given to the club over 40 years. The presentation was made by Jim Napier, Association President, at the General Committee Meeting of all clubs on 8th January 2009. The Association Medal has been awarded annually by the Aberdeenshire Amateur Football Association since 1991.

6th January 2009 - The Year of the Ring

Over the Christmas break, there must have been something in the water in Ellon as a couple of Thistle players decided to pop the question to their respective partners. Congratulations to midfielders Stephen 'Menace' Cruickshanks and Callum 'Pudsey' Duncan who emulated team mates Ryan Birnie and Bruce Alexander by getting engaged in 2008. Which brings me to the latest poll, who will be the next Thistle player to get engaged? Cast your votes here now.....

5th January 2009 - Happy New Year

After a short break over the festive period, Thistleweb has now been fully updated to include all the results and statistics for 2008. However, due to the absence of reporter Graeme Giles, the latest match account is not up to the usual high standard. Thistle kick-off the new year with a trip to Balgownie to face University Strollers in the Barclay Cook Cup first round. The Jags were less than impressive when the two sides met just before Christmas but claimed a point in a 1-1 draw.

14th December 2008 - Thistle Top Division Two East

Thistle's 5-1 victory over FC Polska at The Meadows, coupled with Stoneywood's surprise defeat to Glendale, saw the Jags reach the summit of Division Two East for the first time this season. After a disappointing start to the campaign which included three defeats in their opening five fixtures, topping the table before the end of the year seemed unlikely. However, Thistle have responded positively to the 'crisis' talks in August which were sparked after the shock home defeat to McTeagle and have now gone unbeaten in eight league games.

9th December 2008 - Pub Watch III

It's that time of year again when Ellon Thistle go in search of their Pub-Watch Ambassador. In recent years, Neil Murray and Graeme Giles have both landed the accolade over the festive period due to drunken misdemeanours in local pubs. Cast your vote on the home page for who you think is this years favourite...

8th December 2008 - Formartine Utd U19's 2 Ellon Thistle 3

Thistle defeated Formartine United's under 19 side by the odd goal once again on the ice covered astroturf at Oldmeldrum on Monday night. A goal from Duncan McGill was sandwiched between Andy MacLean's brace giving Thistle the victory after United had deservedly led by two goals.

3rd November 2008 - Sweeper Winner

After many weeks of rollovers, the Ellon United/Ellon Thistle Lucky Six Lottery prize has finally been won. Thistle's very own Michael Gibson claimed the £1500 with the numbers 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 12. Next week, there is £1000 up for grabs by selecting 6 numbers from 20.

31st October 2008 - Trick or Treat?

Daniel Adamson & Martyn Duncan should be available for selection for Saturday's game at home to Luthermuir despite spending Friday night terrorising Hatton with their trick or treat antics. It was a long night for the duo with Adamson out way beyond his 9pm curfew. However, Duncan hailed the night a success with his haul of 33p, five penny chews and a blow job.

20th October 2008 - Coincidence?

Martyn Duncan returned from a five week absence with Thistle trying to preserve an 8 match unbeaten run. He featured from the bench in the 6-2 mauling by Theologians in what was arguably Thistle's worst performance of the season and he started the shock 1-0 defeat at home to ARI Thistle. Is it just coincidence that Thistle's form has dipped since the return of the Hatton Half-Inch? His team mates eagerly await his next scheduled absence....

20th October 2008 - Cup-tober

October is cup month for Thistle as their AFC Trophy 2nd round tie against RGU has been scheduled for Saturday 25th. Thistle will be looking to avoid elimination from knockout competition for the third consecutive week after defeats to Theologians in the Scottish Cup and ARI Thistle in the North of Scotland Cup already this month. The misfiring Jags will also be hoping to hit the target this weekend after the Opta-Index stat counter for attempts on the visitor's goal went into meltdown during the game against ARI Thistle and yet Ellon still drew a blank.

19th October 2008 - Thistle Fundraiser

Ellon Thistle will be hosting a fundraising event at the New Inn Hotel on Saturday 15th November. Local band Elegy will be performing for what promises to be an enjoyable occasion. The night kicks off at 8pm and everyone is welcome so get involved!

8th October 2008 - Cup Draws

Draws for the next rounds of all of the local cup competitions were made on Thursday 2nd October. This includes the Quarter-Finals of all divisional cups, the Second Round of the Association Cup and Dickie Trophy and finally the Third Round of the AFC Trophy. Thistle have been drawn away to University Strollers in the Barclay Cook Cup and if they progress they will host Insch at The Meadows in the quarter finals. In the Dickie Trophy, Thistle will be looking to improve on last seasons semi final appearance and begin the competition at home to Luthermuir. A win away to RGU in the second round of the AFC Trophy will result in a home tie against Rattrays XI in the third round.

6th October 2008 - Formartine United U19's 1 Ellon Thistle 2

Thistle came out on top by the odd goal in three against Formartine United's under 19 side on Monday night at Oldmeldrum. Martyn Duncan played his first match for five weeks while Mark Cockburn also returned from a lengthy absense and put Ellon in front after some dazzling footwork and a clinical left footed strike. Formartine equalised in the second half before Michael Wild latched onto an exquisite pass from Steven Beaton to fire Thistle back in front. Another inch perfect Beaton pass put Wild through on goal in the closing seconds but the striker blazed high and wide having rounded the United keeper.

1st October 2008 - The Duncan v Duncan Trophy

Forget Terry v Terry and Ferdinand v Ferdinand, Ellon Thistle's very own Duncan v Duncan Trophy is born. Full details can now be found in the Fun & Games section. Click Here

19th September 2008 - Thistle in Europe?

Ellon Thistle face a European encounter on Saturday when they travel to FC Polska. The match had to be switched from Warsaw to Aulton on police advice amid safety fears for the travelling Ellon support. The match is Thistle's third away league fixture in succession and they will look to preserve their recent unbeaten record of five games.

10th September 2008 - Fair Weather Trainers & Foreign Imports

Tuesday nights training session at the Gordon Park took place during a torrential downpour. Surprisingly given the conditions, the Thistle squad were graced with the presence of both Michael Wild and Paul Ironside. Both players were noticeably devastated with their decision to attend and as a result of the poor conditions this week, future sessions will now take place indoors in order to entice the new breed of fair weather players to training. For the purpose of naming and shaming, these include David Anderson, Stuart Batty, Adam Kerr, Stephen Cruickshanks, Mark Cockburn & Andy MacLean. Meanwhile, the results of Thistle's expanded scouting network were evident as a German, known only as 'Forklift', was undeterred by the appalling weather and began his trial on Tuesday night. All aboard the Ironside freight train....choo choo......

8th September 2008 - Pub Quiz on Sunday 21st September

Get yourselves down to the Bridge Bar on Sunday 21st September and take part in the Ellon Thistle pub quiz. There's no doubt Allan Giles will have an extensive array of brainteasers to get everyone thinking with rounds including Music, Sport and the legendary Make No Mistake round. Prizes will be on offer to the winning quartet so we look forward to seeing you there....

2nd September 2008 - Transfer Deadline Day

With the club's coffers swelling due to increased sweeper sales, a number of Ellon Thistle fans camped outside The Meadows expecting a big name signing to be unveiled on transfer deadline day. However, they trudged away from the ground disappointed as transfer activity was non-existent. With ex-Ellon United man Stuart Batty announcing his availability and the recent acquisition of full-back Adam Kerr, manager Kevin Kennedy was content with the current squad available to him despite the loss of midfielders Jamie McNeil and Mark Mathers.

1st September 2008 - Training

Despite victory on Saturday in the first round of the AFC Trophy, Ellon Thistle manager Kevin Kennedy has promised his squad a tough training session on Wednesday night. Kennedy was unavailable to conduct last weeks session and as a result, the Thistle squad enjoyed an hour of exciting games like cat and mouse, handball, dodgeball and hide and seek. With the prospect of a lung busting workout inevitable, odds on Michael Wild and Paul Ironside appearing on Wednesday night have been eased considerably.

31st August 2008 - Night Out & Babysitter Club

After their victory on Saturday, the Thistle players and management enjoyed a meal at La Bambas followed by a substantial quantity of alcoholic beverages. Meanwhile, Paul Ironside accepted responsibility as leader of the babysitter club by entertaining youngsters Neil Henderson, David Anderson, Keith Duncan and Adam Kerr. The young quartet (and Ironside) declined the invitation to the Mexican restaurant in favour of jelly & ice cream at Rambo Land. Rumours have surfaced that a number of the young squad over-indulged in fizzy pop & penny sweets before arriving home after 9pm and are therefore grounded for the next two weeks.

21st August 2008 - Ellon Meadows U19's 1 Ellon Thistle 5

Thistle faced Ellon Meadows under-19's in a friendly at The Meadows on Wednesday night. It provided an opportunity for fringe players to improve match fitness with places up for grabs in the starting eleven for Saturday's visit to Glendale as work commitments, injuries and suspensions take their toll. Thistle were in front early on courtesy of an own goal by a Meadows defender but they soon equalised before goals from Andy McLean and Richard Longmuir made it 3-1 at half-time. A classy finish by veteran McLean and an equally impressive strike by Michael Gibson in the second period rounded off a comfortable victory. A decent performance and a valuable exercise for Thistle's second string who did no harm to their chances of appearing in the first eleven.

Ellon Thistle:

Adamson, Kerr, K Duncan, Alexander, Gibson, Batty, Beaton, Mathers, McGill, McLean, Longmuir

Substitutes:

Birnie, Henderson, Anderson, McNeil, Cruickshanks

Big Time Charlies:

18th August 2008 - Mistaken Identity?

Martyn Duncan has refused to pay his club fine after picking up a booking for dissent during the weekend fixture with McTeagle. The midfielder claims he was the victim of mistaken identity and that substitute Steven Beaton was the culprit of a foul-mouthed tirade towards the referee. Beaton also denies the accusations. Meanwhile, Duncan's teammates were grateful he left his training boots at home for Saturday's game after a less than impressive training performance on Wednesday night where he struggled to make a 5 yard pass for the majority of the session.

17th August 2008 - Crisis Talks

After Saturday's home defeat to McTeagle, Thistle players were locked in the dressing room for showdown talks as another three points slipped away. With just six points taken from a possible 15, Thistle find themselves in seventh place six points adrift of leaders Stoneywood having played a game more. However, The Jags found themselves in a similar position last season when they slumped to defeat 3 times in the opening seven fixtures but managed to regroup and re-establish a promotion challenge only to falter towards the tail end of the season. It's a disappointing start but Thistle have the chance to get back on track when they host Monymusk on Monday night at The Meadows.

6th August 2008 - Alexander Outburst At Media

Bruce Alexander is understood to be unhappy at the lack of recognition his performances have been receiving. Alexander's frustration began last season when a number of solid defensive performances saw Thistle go unbeaten in seven games. During this period, the centre-half duo of David Anderson and Neil Henderson received the plaudits amassing four man of the match awards between them to Alexander's none. The lofty sweeper believes his efforts are going unnoticed and was outraged when he was confused with Stephen Cruickshanks in the latest match report over the execution of a free-kick that led to a Thistle scoring chance. Furthermore, Alexander took offence after an offside trap that he orchastrated was described as being 'poor' and the fact that the back three, under his command, kept a comfortable clean sheet and was omitted from the report.

4th August 2008 - Gibson in Animal Cruelty Shocker

Michael Gibson has been reported to the RSPCA by horrified onlookers at Monday night's game against Bankhead. Substitute Gibson is accused of deliberately kicking a ball at an alsation during the half-time warm-up striking the poor pooch in the head. However, Gibson has protested his innocence and due to his previous record of hitting the target, it is assumed that it was not his intention to strike the animal and he is likely to go unpunished. Meanwhile, the dog has made a full recovery.

4th August 2008 - Harden Up

Thistle midfielder Jamie McNeil has been struggling during recent games with blisters on his feet. This can be a problem especially during the summer months and has resulted in the midfielder being withdrawn from a number of games. Uncle Chop (pictured) recommends he hardens the f@!% up.

31st July 2008 - Jock Signs On

Thistle's quest to find a goalkeeper finally ended when Daniel 'Jock' Adamson signed for the forthcoming season. After lengthy discussions with his agent, the deal for the seventeen year old was sealed when the offer of a bag of Haribo and the latest edition of the Beano was impossible to turn down.

28th July 2008 - Opening Fixtures

Thistle will open their 2008/09 Division Two East campaign as they did the 2007/08 season at home to Stoneywood. The Jags are looking to get off to a good start and will want to avoid a repeat of the 3-0 defeat the visitors dished out last August. The following Monday night, Bankhead host Thistle at Sheddocksley.

27th July 2008 - Trophies International 1 Ellon Thistle 4

The second installment of Thistle's friendly double header took place at Auchterellon on Sunday where they faced Third Division Trophies International. First half goals from Michael Wild and Jamie McNeil put Ellon in control before the interval. Steven Beaton setup Duncan McGill before grabbing a goal for himself to make it four. Trophies snatched a consolation with the final kick of the ball to deny Daniel Adamson a clean sheet after another confident display in goal.

26th July 2008 - Formartine U19s 1 Ellon Thistle 1

Thistle continued their pre-season preparations with a weekend double header beginning at Oldmeldrum against Formartine United under 19's. Seventeen year old Daniel Adamson made his debut between the sticks for Thistle as they continue their search for a goalkeeper. Adamson did well but will have been disappointed to concede an equaliser after a classy Duncan McGill finish had put the visitors in front.

20th July 2008 - Ferryhill 2 Ellon Thistle 4

Thistle travelled to Sheddocksley for their first pre-season friendly where they faced First Division Ferryhill. Thistle were dominant throughout and ran out comfortable winners thanks to goals from trialist Jamie McNeil, David Anderson, an own goal and Michael Gibson.

24th June 2008 - New Leagues Announced For 2008/09 Season

Thistle's opponents in the forthcoming league campaign have been announced. Luthermuir, Glendale and University Stollers were all relegated from Division One and Deva Dons join FC Polska from Division Three. Bankhead, Monymusk, Grammar FP, Halliburton and Rothie Rovers switch from Division Two North while Insch, McTeagle and Stoneywood Amateurs will compete with Thistle for another season.

20th June 2008 - Giles Returns To The Bridge

After six months watching Ant & Dec and You've Been Framed on Saturday nights, Graeme Giles finally ended his pub watch ban with a visit to the Oooh Ah Bridge Bar for a pint or twelve. However, Giles would like to thank bar staff at the McDonald Golf Club for supporting him through his latest ordeal.

15th June 2008 - Ins and Outs

Rumours of Cammy Davidson's departure from Thistle have been confirmed after his missus refused to provide any more Saturday permission slips. Davidson finished the season as third top scorer with ten goals. Goalkeeper Andy Dickinson appears to have fended off the overtures of Fraserburgh FC and signed on for another year. However, the same cannot be said for striker Billy Dailly who so far has rejected the offer of a new contract. Manager Kev Kennedy's offer of a new pair of Lotto boots has been turned down and according to his agent, Dailly is holding out for the offer of TWO free pints and a packet of crisps at the Bridge on winning match days. Despite this loss, Thistle have moved fast to find more than adequate replacements. More details soon.

15th June 2008 - Pre-season Training

With the dust still settling on season 2007-08, Thistle players have been notified that preparations for the new season begin on Saturday 12th July at the Gordon Park in Ellon at 2pm.
